Acclaimed rockers The Medics drop a potent new song, “Wake Up”, for Invasion Day—in solidarity with the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples struggling against the celebration of colonialism in ‘Australia’.
The Medics have been working up some REAL shii for Invasion Day. We have all been busting for some new music from these fellas since the release of Foundations. And I cannot even with this special release, a call to acknowledge the real history of this country.
Kahl Wallis the deadz singer-songwriter from The Medics says,
“Australia Day is not a day of celebration; it is a day of mourning. As the rest of the country gathers together they commemorate colonisation. But for us the 26th of January is a day of sadness, grief, and most importantly, a day of remembrance. It is a sacred day for our people to pay respect to those we lost and to support our brothers and sisters who continue to suffer now.”
Imagine if you laid a flower in remembrance for every one of our people who where killed in colonial massacres. A never-ending sea of flowers would flow to the point where the sky and the land meet on the horizon. You can’t exact the number of those killed on the frontier wars because it hasn’t stopped, deaths in custody continue, children are removed and our lands territories and resources are destroyed.
“The time has come for us as a country to WAKE UP to our history. The time has come for us as a country to heal and move forward. The time has come for us to change this date”
Props to The Medics for such a strong message. This song ain’t jus for mob but for that southern cross ‘straya’ that’s permanently afflicted with a cognitive dissonance that continues to reject our right to pain and mourning on this day. Our histories have been shrouded in a veil of denial in the Australian public for too long so listen and #WAKEUP…
